Day 29: Cupcakes and Traffic Jams

Today (Wednesday) was the last day of fasting this Ramadan and I have to say I am very pleased to have reached this point! It feels like such a long time since I strolled through Glenboig Park speaking to myself for an Instagram story, saying how easy my first day had been.

As I write, my 29th and final Iftar has been and gone and Eid-al-Fitr has been officially announced by Glasgow Central Mosque tonight, because the new moon has been sighted. I hadn't arranged for an extravagant meal tonight - I've been keeping it simple for a week or so - but tomorrow and in to the weekend I am going to really enjoy myself in the eating department. 

In Islam it is forbidden to fast during Eid and I am 100% behind this mandatory and celebratory instruction. As I discussed earlier this week, Eid is a time to celebrate indulgently and exchange gifts and blessings with your family, friends and neighbours. I will definitely be indulging without guilt, anxiety or consideration for my preferred eating habits. I've earned a celebration this past month!

At school earlier today I also received a final batch of dates from my student, 'R', who handed me a fresh box after finding out how much I'd grown to love them. This evening, despite a horrific accident and frustrsting traffic jam on the M74 adding an hour to my commute, I have also been privileged to receive visits and sweet gifts from my regularly mentioned friends (Zenab and family; and Zenith and Jas). I feel so very grateful to you all for the help, support and encouragement you have given me during my first Ramadan. I couldn't, or wouldn't, have done it without you all. 

I too have been out and about today collecting a box of sweet treats to give to 'R', Zenab and Zenith (as well as a box for me and my family too!). Thanks so much to Designer Cakes by Paige for fulfilling my order to such a high standard. I can't wait to tuck in to far too many of these delights tomorrow!


There will be more to say tomorrow, but for now I'd just like to say Eid Mubarak to everyone who is celebrating around the world today and tomorrow. I've loved my first Ramadan experience and I'm going to thoroughly enjoy my first Eid!

Last night was a really enjoyable first Iftar for me!  I cannot stress enough how precious the water felt when I was drinking it for the first time after 18.5 hours without consuming anything at all. The dates, yoghurt and fruit were obviously a sweet benefit, although I did feel slightly high  after I'd snaffled four dates back-to-back. I even struggled to eat much of my main meal of roast duck to start with! It was weird, I'd expected myself (someone who'd happily order '2 For Tuesday' and eat both myself) to be ravenous and just devour everything in sight. But, I didn't. I felt really calm. Unusually calm for someone of my appetite. My training came next and it was my second Handstand workout of the week. Day 13: Fasting cramps, muscle injuries and electrolytes

I may have said this a few time already, but I suppose every time it happens has to be the "hardest day of Ramadan" so far...today has been the hardest day of Ramadan so far.  I knew from my first PE lesson this morning that something wasn't quite right. I was trying to enjoy some leisurely 3v2 basketball, boys vs staff, but my legs were absolutely dead. I felt like I had run a half-marathon before coming to work. Muscles all over my body were entering in to cramp spasms under hardly any exertion and I started to feel quite weird in the head; like brain fog. I still played on having fun with the kids though, and in a few subsequent lessons too, but it was definitely taking it out of me significantly more than it had done last week when it was sunny and quite warm (for Scotland at least). My favourite part of the morning was trying to put down 80 cones in a rectangular with straight lines for a problem solving game I call minesweeper. It genuinely took me 20 minutes! There...

"James, the moon hasn't been sighted yet!"

Has anyone seen the moon yet? Last night, as I read and responded to an array of positive and encouraging messages in response to ' Why am I fasting for Ramadan ', my friend Zenab got back in touch... Huh?! "Have I written something wrong", I anxiously thought. No-no, James, read it again. The actual moon hadn't been sighted yet - and I can be honest, I wasn't sure at this stage by who or from where the moon would be sighted. As became clear very quickly, Glasgow Central Mosque (amongst plenty of others around the world I imagine) had announced via social media that Ramadan would not start until the following night. Cue great excitement and I immediately asked Zenab what was now the most pressing question... In what was now an incredible change in events the birthday cake that my wife had slaved over all evening could be enjoyed as a family - with breakfast, lunch and dinner!
